Cleaning Your Dorm In 30 Seconds

Below you will find a list of things you can do in 30 seconds or less. Do these every day or at least once a week and you'll save yourself hours of cleaning at the end of the week or month. You may have to make a few minor changes to get the time down to half a minute. Like the centipede mentioned in our Simplifying Dorm Life article, once you get into the habit of doing these quick fixes, you will do them without thought or scheduling. It will pay off big time in the long run.

Bathroom cleaning tips:

Squeegee the shower - Before you dry yourself off, run the squeegee down one side of the shower or tub enclosure removing all of the water droplets. Do this every day for the first four days of the week and you'll have all four sides done by the fourth day of the week. Keeping the squeegee in the shower on one of those suction cup hooks will help you remember and save you time. Each side will take less than 30 seconds to do. This will prevent the nasty, time consuming job of cleaning that tough buildup of mold and soap scum which takes FOREVER to clean.

Wipe down the faucets in the shower - Do this on the fifth day. If you keep a microfiber cloth on the same hook as the squeegee, it will help you to remember and you won't have to look for it.

Wipe the mirror - On the sixth day, once you are finished drying yourself off from the shower, take the microfiber cloth that you have placed near the bathroom sink and quickly wipe down the mirror while it is still covered with steam from your shower as mentioned earlier. This only takes a few seconds.

Wipe the sink and counter top - You can do this every day if you have the time but make a habit of doing it on the seventh day and you'll know you've done it at least once a week. If you shave you may want to do it more often than once a week.

Fold the towels - Simplifying and cleaning as you go requires that you leave things as you found them. When you take the towels off of the towel bar to dry yourself off after the shower, you must put them back, folded neatly. If they need to be washed, put them in the hamper and replace them with fresh, folded towels.

Use a hamper - Do this every day. If your dirty laundry is in the hamper, you don't have to spend time picking it up off the floor. This requires NO time to do and is a BIG time saver. When the hamper is close to full, schedule time to wash the laundry if you don't already have that planned.

Throw out the garbage - When it becomes full. If it doesn't overflow, you won't need to spend time picking it up from around the garbage pail. This may take more than 30 seconds but only if you have to travel far to dispose of the garbage bag.

Everything I haven't mentioned such as the toilet and the floor will take longer than 30 seconds to do. Cleaning these items should be done on a weekly basis making the job an easier one but there's just no way you're getting them done in less than half a minute. Don't let them get too dirty. That is the big secret! When you need to spend more than a 30 seconds doing something, prepare for it wisely. As students, you are already using multitasking in your every day life. Put on your headphones and listen to an E-book, call a friend to plan your next meeting or just chill out and listen to your favorite song while you work. Every time you find yourself doing more than one thing at a time, smile and realize you are a super efficient machine that won't be stopped!

Kitchen cleaning tips:

Wipe the table and/or counter top - Do it once a day. Night time or morning, your choice.

Rinse the dishes - If you don't have time to do them right away. It will make the scrubbing so much easier when you do get the time. Remember though, they should be done daily if you don't want a big headache.

Empty the garbage - When it gets close to full, take it out. If you let it go too far, it becomes a chore.

Wipe the window sills - As mentioned in the bathroom section, make a day of the week to do this and do it on that day every week. Let's pick day one for the sake of this article.

Wipe the windows - You just need to wipe any prints that may be on the windows themselves if you started with clean windows. Save the full window cleaning for the beginning of the season. By the way, did you know that vinegar is a perfect 'green cleaning' substitute for ammonia when it comes to windows?

Wipe the microwave - If you start with a clean microwave, wipe the face on day two. It only takes about 10 seconds. Tough buildup inside can be easily removed by mixing a cup of water with a little lemon juice or even vanilla extract. Put the cup in the microwave on high for about two minutes. This will loosen stubborn caked on food. It will also leave the room smelling great!

Bedroom cleaning tips:

Make your bed - Every morning. This may take a bit more than 30 seconds but it's just a good habit.

Keep your desk organized - If you don't do this as you go, trust me, it will cost you a lot of time!

Wipe down the window sills - Once a week. Keep the microfiber in your desk drawer. Save time!

Wipe down the desk and electronics - Do one item a day but keep the tasks to around 30 seconds. If you clock yourself the first time, you'll have a better idea how long it takes. Anything longer than 30 seconds may be split up into two days. Try to get everything done in a week. This includes printers, monitors, speakers,lamps, etc.
