Used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of health conditions due to its antioxidant properties. Its main compound, thymol, is antimicrobial and anti-fungal, making it great for cleaning and disinfecting.
As with any plant oil, a person may have an allergic reaction (do a small skin test before use). With thyme oil, a sensitivity may occur in those allergic to grass. Allergic symptoms may be skin irritation, redness, chest pain, shortness of breath or tightening of the throat. High doses of thyme may produce negative side effects including heartburn, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, diarrhea, headache and dizziness.
