Used as detergents and surfactants. SLS is found in industrial soaps, cleaners and degreasers. SLS is also used as one of the main ingredients in cosmetics, toothpastes, hair conditioner and almost all shampoos and products that foam.
In tests, animals that were exposed to SLS experienced eye damage, depression, labored breathing, diarrhea, severe skin irritation and corrosion and even death.
Research has indicated SLS can cause malformation in children's eyes, may be damaging to the immune system and cause damage to skin (layers may separate and inflame due to its protein denaturing properties).
Reports reveal it may be one of the most dangerous of all ingredients in personal care products. Research has shown that SLS when combined with other chemicals can be transformed into a potent class of carcinogens.
