Hurricane Sandy Cleanup

As of 09 December 2012, Hurricane Sandy is the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, with a diameter of 1100 miles. Currently being considered the most costly Atlantic hurricane in history, surpassing Katrina according to many of the insurance adjusters that we have spoken with. Long Island began to experience the effects of the storm on Monday, 29 October 2012. Cleanup efforts began immediately on the mainland but Fire Island had restricted access, as it was patrolled by the Coast Guard.

There was no access at all for the first few weeks. When the ferries started up again, only residents with proof of ownership were allowed access. Finally, contractors and insurance adjusters could join them in Fire Island.

We did as many storm cleanups as possible in Long Island. We offered our green cleaning services for free to seniors in need of help. Now it is time to help those in Fire Island.

Saltaire, Fire Island

Here are a few of the photos we took when the ferries allowed contractors to go over to the island. It was over a month after the storm. The first group was taken on 01 December 2012

So many of the houses in Fire Island had the electricity shut off due to the storm damage and almost all of the houses had been winterized, so there was no running water. Cleaning these storm damaged homes would be difficult but we were determined to help.

Our First Hurricane Sandy Cleanup in Fire Island

The cleanings began slowly at first. A regular customer Emailed us to let us know that she was waiting for the adjusters to asses the storm damage. While she waited for the assessment, a neighbor needed our storm cleanup services. We scheduled it on our first available opening.

In the second group of photos shown above, the storm cleanup is complete. We've used non-toxic antimicrobials on the floors and walls. Unfortunately, I lost the 'before' set of photos but here are the results of our storm cleaning.

Ongoing Hurricane Sandy Cleanup in Fire Island

After our first storm cleanup in Saltaire, referrals came in quickly. Our regular customer and the one from the storm cleanup shown above both recommended our services. This time, I got before and afters.

During this hurricane Sandy cleanup, the owner of a highly acclaimed Fire Island based construction firm met with the owners to do an estimate on the repairs. He was impressed with our work.
